The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the gold standard guide for mental health professionals, formally recognized hoarding as disorder in 2013 and the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Foundation estimates that one in 50 people suffer from this condition. Individuals with hoarding disorder have difficulty getting rid of everyday items, and as a result collect things that serve no clear purpose. The volume soon become overwhelming and often hazardous. Children of hoarders may struggle to break through to their parents, while parents often feel a deep sense of shame about their condition.

Gently Help Them See Hoarding as a Mental Problem

Some scientific evidence suggests that hoarders may accumulate excess belongings because they view each item as overly important and sentimental. To help your parents recognize their problem with hoarding, begin with a gentle and non-judgmental approach. For example, you might mention that you’ve noticed a lot of stuff piling up in the living room and worry about their health. Judge their reactions and respond accordingly. In many cases, hoarders have insight into their problem and simply feel helpless about the mess. Provide information from the OCD Foundation and other scientific communities that may help your parents recognize that their condition is known and treatable.

Find an Area Specialist in Hoarding or OCD

Because hoarding disorder has only recently entered the public worldview, it may be challenging to find a qualified treatment professional in your area. Some hoarders respond to a class of medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), so it is worthwhile to set up an appointment with a psychiatrist who is familiar with hoarding. Psychotherapy is another successful treatment for hoarding disorder. Look for a therapist who specializes in cognitive behavioral therapy, skills training, or motivational interviewing, which have empirical support. If a hoarding specialist is not available in your area, therapists who work with individuals with OCD are likely use similar techniques as those employed for hoarding disorder.

Approach the Clean-Up Process Gradually

With a house full of clutter, you may be tempted to set aside a weekend and purge everything all at once. However, this action may be jarring and too sudden for your parents, and could result in resentment or a strained relationship. Instead, take a gradual approach to cleaning. Ask your parents to choose one room to de-clutter. Make arrangements for an on-site dumpster to dispose of waste quickly and easily. Most dumpster rental companies offer delivery, trash removal, and pick-up all in one fee. Find out more by visiting NextDayDumpsters.com and reviewing their options.

Encourage Them to Seek Social Support

Hoarders typically avoid inviting people into their homes because of the mess. The result can be a life that is stressful and socially isolating. For many individuals with hoarding disorder, joining a support group can be helpful. Your parents can meet other hoarders who are struggling to overcome their problems. The International OCD Foundation maintains a list of support groups by geographical region.

It’s also important for you to stay mentally balanced during this challenging time. Helping your parents cope with their mental illness is physically and emotionally exhausting. A support group such as Children of Hoarders allows you to share your experiences and learn from the strategies that other children have used to help their hoarder parents.

Top Tips To Help You Dance The Night Away In High-Heeled Shoes

Top Tips To Help You Dance The Night Away In High-Heeled Shoes

Share/Bookmark

Now every girl knows high-heels make your legs look longer and your body look slimmer. These are just two of the reasons why we force our feet into them when heading out to dance, whether in a bar, club or at a dance class.

top tips help you dance Top Tips To Help You Dance The Night Away In High Heeled Shoes

Unfortunately, high-heels also have a detrimental effect on our feet and at the end of a dance session, many women are often left with blisters, cuts and various aches and pains in their ankles and calves.

So how can we carry on wearing heels, which make us feel so good in the beginning when we first start dancing and stop the bad effects at the end?

Practice makes perfect

As with anything, it is really important to practice dancing in your high-heels. You should never buy a new pair of high-heels and try and dance in them without having practiced a few times beforehand. All shoes need breaking in and no more so than high-heels.

When you first get your high-heels, you should walk around in them in your house for at least 15 minutes a time, making sure you do this at least once a day for a week before you’re planning on dancing in them.

Try doing a few different dance steps in the heels, including side steps and slow spins. You need to make sure you’re stable in them and that you’re able to stay upright. Make sure you try dance steps on both carpet and tiled floors since floor type can greatly affect your stability in heels.

Note where you feel unstable and what dance step you were doing and then avoid doing this when it comes to the actual day when you’re out dancing in your heels.

Work on your balance

One of the most important things you can do if you’re keen to continue dancing in your high-heels, is to improve your balance. Your body’s core muscles are really important to work on to get your balance right.

If you go to the gym or work out at home try to strengthen your abdominal wall and this will definitely help your ability to stay strong when dancing in heels. Pilates is also a very effective way of building up a strong core and will certainly help you maintain good grounding when dancing in your high heels.

Invest in a high-quality pair of gel inserts

Gel inserts are an absolute life-saver when it comes to dancing in heels. There are many different shapes and sizes available for high-heels so make sure you buy the correct ones for your shoes.

They work by reducing the amount of pressure on the soles and heels of your feet, which wearing high-heels naturally increases. They therefore make wearing high-heels a lot more comfortable and enable you to dance for longer without so many negative effects the next day (or at the end of the night).

Dancing in heels always requires planning and preparation!

One of the best tips to help you wear high-heels whilst dancing the night away is to only change into them when you actually reach the dance class, bar or club. There’s no point putting more pressure on your feet whilst travelling to and from location. Keep your heels in a bag until you reach your destination and then change into them and dance away to your heart’s content.

It’s also a good idea to warm up your muscles before putting your heels on. After all, you wouldn’t go running or play a team sport without warming up the muscles in your legs, so why would you go dancing for a few hours without warming up? It’s really important to get your calf muscles and ankles warmed up and stretched before dancing in heels since it will help to prevent injuries.

Flower Power – Apps That Help You Find Plants That Double As Pest Repellents

Flower Power – Apps That Help You Find Plants That Double As Pest Repellents

Share/Bookmark

Most of today’s environmentally conscious gardeners and commercial famers utilize a method known as “companion planting” instead of widely using chemical pesticides to keep detrimental insects away. Companion planting can help in increasing yield by encouraging pollination and deterring pests. Anyone, even you, can use the idea behind companion planting in controlling garden pests that are troubling you and your family.

garden

If you like to grow flowering plants, you have the option of planting those that can also double as pest repellents. But first, you have to identify your problem pest and then determine which type of plant possesses the characteristics to deter it, and, yes, there are apps that can help you out. Here are a few examples.

Grow Your Own (Free)

This app is from the Royal Horticultural Society and it is a great resource for new and seasoned gardeners. Grow Your Own helps you choose which plant or vegetable to get that suits your climate, and it also provides in-depth instructions on sowing, caring and harvesting. This is a wonderful tool to have if you plan on using herbs and other veggies, such as garlic, onion, and pepper, to drive back upsetting pests, including rodents and rabbits. Another great feature of this app is that it alerts you when there is a possibility of frost or drought so that you can take the proper measures to protect your plants.

FlowerPedia ($4.99)

It may be slightly pricey, especially to some who prefer free apps, but FlowerPedia is a nifty app that can help you in plant identification. Use the information it provides to find flowers that you can use for pest control. It also gives you details on the geographic location of certain ornamental plants. So, let’s say that you’re in Cincinnati, Chicago or Detroit. According to Rove Pest Control Reviews, these are the top three cities that are infested by bedbugs, and, by using FlowerPedia, you can use the app to find or identify the bugbane or black cohosh. This perennial produces a flower that is repellent to bedbugs.

Audubon Wildflowers ($4.99)

If you are located in North America, then you should have this app which can help you in identifying a huge variety of plants, including beneficial weeds that repel insects, like sagebrush (Artemisia) that wards off mosquitoes. Using the Audubon mobile field guide, you can read about different plant species, see brilliant photos, as well as check out maps that provide details regarding a plant’s geographic distribution. Its user-friendly interface also makes it easy for you to share tips or plant sightings through social media.

Garden Plan Pro ($9.99)

Yes, it may be an expensive app, but some say that Garden Plan Pro is worth every penny. Not only does it offer an extensive plant database, but it also provides so much information about gardening. Use the app to choose crops or flowering plants and organize your garden plot. It’s a great help to beginning gardeners because it offers comprehensive information on how to grow plants. Plus, it also provides tips on crop rotation and succession planting, wherein the available garden space is efficiently optimized. The app can easily determine which types of flowers or crops will grow best in your area, and it will give tips about when to start planting and when to harvest. So, use this to start growing beautiful chrysanthemums, marigolds, nasturtiums or dahlias that help in repelling a variety of pesky bugs, like roaches, fleas, mosquitoes, and bedbugs, to name a few.

Top Tips To Help Men Choose The Right Fragrance

Top Tips To Help Men Choose The Right Fragrance

Share/Bookmark

It is really important to smell nice; not only for other people’s sakes but also for our own. Having a nice, distinctive scent can give us a sense of confidence and help us feel sexy and is also a definitive tick in the box where women are concerned.

top tips help men choose Top Tips To Help Men Choose The Right Fragrance

Smells are really important for women and if, as a man, you take care to smell nice, you will definitely be remembered. You’d actually be quite shocked at the amount of weight a smell can carry when a woman is deciding if she fancies someone or not.

So, with all the above in mind, it’s important to be able to choose suitable fragrances that suit you and your personality.

Learning about fragrances

If you are really serious about finding the best fragrance for yourself then you should definitely learn more about how fragrances are constructed. Most people don’t even realise that all perfumes are made up of a selection of different ‘notes’.

There are top notes, middle notes and base notes. These different notes are basically formed of a range of different scents but all come together to form the one perfume or cologne. A trained perfumer will be able to tell you what these different notes are, just as a trained wine taster would be able to detail the ingredients in a bottle of wine.

How to choose your perfect cologne

Choosing a scent should not be taken lightly. By that we don’t mean it’s an extremely serious task that should take weeks but taking a day or so to consider your options is more than acceptable.

The first thing to do is obviously the sniff test. Try out a few different scents and see what comes to mind when you inhale the scent. Try to figure out if you think these scents would suit your style and personality or not. It’s a good idea to keep track of all those you have tested, perhaps even using a notepad to note down your first impressions.

This may sound like a lot of work for choosing a scent but you’d be surprised at how many people just walk into a shop, buy a cologne after a quick sniff test and then realise the smell has changed by the time they get home and they now don’t like it.

Give your nose a break every now and again and leave the cologne store to enable you to breathe in fresh air and let the spray from the colognes you have tried dissipate a bit and react with the air. This can totally change a scent and will give you a better idea of whether or not you really like it.

How to apply your scent properly

Once you’ve been through the process above and given yourself time to really sniff out the most suitable fragrance for yourself, it is time to learn how to apply it properly. So many men just slather themselves in fragrance and this is not good!

If all men stuck to the following, we’d never have to suffer severe nostril distress after coming in to contact with a man and his overpowering fragrance:

– Always try before you buy and know how strong the fragrance is when it has had time to fully develop.

– Add two dabs of cologne on the chest, near your heart, one dab of cologne on each wrist and then a final dab on the base of the neck. These are all warm pulse points and will ensure your body gives off a consistent cologne scent.

– Don’t every reapply your cologne simply because you cannot smell it. The problem with wearing cologne is that after a time your sense of smell becomes used to it and the scent will no longer seem as strong. Other people, however, will most definitely still be able to smell your fragrance. If you reapply every time you can no longer smell your scent, you will just overpower everyone around you.

James writes for Click Fragrance. When not writing, he can often be found picking out cologne for himself and his friends.

How Aromatherapy Can Help With Allergies

How Aromatherapy Can Help With Allergies

Share/Bookmark

The changing of seasons is usually a welcomed event, as we grow tired of whatever temperature we’ve had to put up with for a long time. Plus, spring and fall are typically the most mild times of the year, so it’s much easier to enjoy the outdoors and stay comfortable.

As far as downsides go to those two specific times of the year, seasonal allergies and hay fever have got to be at, or near the top of the list, creating a wide range of annoying symptoms.

Pollen is most active during the spring and fall, so that’s the time of the year that people will start to experience nasal congestion, sinus pressure, headaches and other symptoms that are common reactions to pollen.

aromatherapy How Aromatherapy Can Help With Allergies

While symptoms get less severe when pollen recedes, it can be difficult to deal with for the first several weeks during that time of the year.

There’s certainly medication that can help, both of the prescription and over-the-counter variety; however, there are also some more holistic methods that can be quite effective.

One such method is aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy for Allergies

Aromatherapy is made up of either herbs or essential oils that you can burn, both of which can be effective treatments for a variety of allergy symptoms. In addition to treating and often alleviating these symptoms, aromatherapy can relieve stress, increase energy and even help to improve things like muscle and joint pain or insomnia.

While aromatherapy isn’t a cure for the baseline problem (exposure and inhalation of pollen), it does help to get you some surface level relief from the nagging symptoms that allergies can cause on a daily basis.

This can be particularly helpful if you stay in one room throughout the day for work, or if you have some leisure time in the evening where you can allow yourself to breathe in the herbs or oils. Some people respond better to one than the other, so you’ll have to do some experimenting and decide whether your body responds better to essential oils or herbs.

Try both and see which one does a better job of relieving your allergy symptoms.

Vaporization

You can also use a vaporizer in conjunction with aromatherapy, which, in the instance of dealing with allergies, could be incredibly helpful, particularly for your nasal passages and sinuses. You can experience relief much quicker, since vaporizers do a better job of releasing the herbs and scents from the oils into the air.

If your original attempt with basic aromatherapy doesn’t yield the desired results, you might try using a vaporizer.

The design is simple– hot air passes through either dried and crushed herbs (or a variety of oils). That air then gets carried throughout the room quickly– much more quickly than the traditional candle burning methods.

Figuring out What Works

Aromatherapy definitely has the potential to help you cope with allergies, but you should do some experimenting and figure out what works best for you. Your body will respond differently to different herbs and oils, so try a few different things and see what gets you the best results.

Marcela De Vivo is a freelance writer from Southern California. As the founder of Gryffin Media, her writing covers a variety of industries, including health, technology and business marketing. She loves writing about holistic alternatives and finds that incorporating aromatherapy in her health routine helps her cope with allergies.

Top Simple Tips To Help You Avoid Mold Build-Up

Top Simple Tips To Help You Avoid Mold Build-Up

Share/Bookmark

Getting mold in your property is one of the worst things that can happen to your home. Once it sets in, mold is incredibly difficult to get rid of and it will be likely to cause a range of problems by affecting your health and your belongings. If you have a mold problem then your best bet is to call in the experts, but better still would be to avoid the mold building up in the first place. Here’s how you can do that with some simple and easy tips.

Keep the Heating On

top simple tips help you Top Simple Tips To Help You Avoid Mold Build Up

Mold occurs where there’s moisture on your surfaces, and this in turn is caused when the moisture in the air comes into contact with cold walls and other surfaces and condenses into droplets of water. By keeping your heating on you can prevent that moisture from turning into condensation and thus avoid those surfaces becoming a hot bed for mold (or a cold bed..).

Many people make the mistake of thinking that they will save energy by keeping their heating off until the last possible minute, but actually the vicious cycle of moisture cooling down cold walls further means this isn’t the case. Use a thermostat and keep your heating at a persistent level.

Open the Windows

top simple tips help you1 Top Simple Tips To Help You Avoid Mold Build Up

While it’s important to keep the heating on, it’s also important to open window at least occasionally so that you can let air in to circulate. A common problem that people have with mold is that the air isn’t moving freely around allowing moisture to build up. Start each day by ‘airing’ your rooms for an hour or so and you’d reduce this problem.

Avoid Air Pockets

Another way that moisture can build up is if you have air pockets in your décor. Air pockets are spaces between furniture or fittings and walls – such as the gap behind your sofa or wardrobe, or the gap behind your curtains. These air pockets often build up mold, so to avoid letting this happen make sure you leave no space or a very big space and move your items around from time to time.

Avoid Condensation

top simple tips help you2 Top Simple Tips To Help You Avoid Mold Build Up

Everything we do from breathing to running a bath will create condensation which can contribute to the build-up of mold. However there are ways we can do to reduce the amount of condensation we produce.

For instance, when boiling the kettle to make tea, try to avoid using more water than necessary. If you do have water in the kettle afterward then you should pour this away in order to prevent it from standing and creating steam. Another tip is that you should run the cold water first whenever you run a bath. This way you avoid leaving hot water standing in the tub.

There are many more pointers which are mostly just a matter of common sense. For instance you shouldn’t hang up clothes indoors to dry if possible, and you should use the hood if you cook soup on the hob. Taking just a little thought when heating water can help you to avoid needing professional mold removal.

Jack Russel is a mold removal expert and works for caremasterclean.com. Removing mold can be quite a difficult task according to him and so has advised useful measures to avoid them in today’s post. He also likes reading and blogging in his spare time.

Top 5 Tips To Help You Keep On Top Of Current Swimwear Trends

Top 5 Tips To Help You Keep On Top Of Current Swimwear Trends

Share/Bookmark

It’s hard to go a day without seeing beautiful celebrities on the beach in the very latest swimwear trend. Of course we only ever see them in magazines or newspapers but in this way, even though it may provoke some jealousy from us, we can see what’s considered the most popular and fashionable swimwear of the moment.

For those who don’t want to experience jealousy at seeing celebs flaunt their toned bodies on idyllic islands, there are a few tips below to help you keep on top of the latest trends:

1. Prints, patterns & detailing

Animal prints are well and truly back in fashion, however, in a non-traditional sense. For instance instead of a black and white zebra print, you will instead find a neon orange version. Geometrical patterns are also on trend, as are costumes that have diagonal or vertical stripes (or both!) Detailing is also extremely popular at the moment, so try and find costumes that really stand out. Look for ruffles, sparkles, costumes with belts and even costumes that are layered. The more detail the costume has, the better.

2. Choosing your colours
To be honest, black and white costumes, on their own or mixed, are always going to be popular, simply because they give off such a classic and elegant impression. However, if you are willing to mix it up a bit, choose more vibrant costumes that come in colours like, bright pink, lime green and dark red. Costumes that are fluorescent may at first seem a bit too much but trust that they will show off your tan perfectly.

3.Choosing your swimwear fabrics
You might think that there isn’t really a wide choice of swimwear fabrics but you would be wrong. In addition to the usual Lycra, you can find costumes that are a mix of cotton and Lycra, tricot, polyester, nylon spandex or tricot. Each material has its own advantages and is popular in its own right; however, it’s best to try a variety of materials before you buy so you can see which you find the most comfortable.

4. Wide selection of bikini styles
Bikinis will never go out of fashion. However, new styles are always being introduced so if you have had your bikinis for a few years, it’s probably time to upgrade. The usual style of bikini can be made to look more up-to-date by incorporating a push-up bra or side-tie bottoms, obviously taking into account colours, materials and detailing too.

For the more risqué ladies and the extremely toned celebs, string bikinis are very popular. Be warned though that you need to have the figure to pull this off. Another popular style this season is the bandini bikini, often seen worn by Kate Moss. This style incorporates a strapless bandeau top and looks really chic and more importantly, prevents strap tan lines.

For ladies that wish to keep up with trends but not show off too much skin, a camakini or tankini are excellent options. Both cover up the top half yet have normal bikini bottoms. They allow women to feel a bit more comfortable yet also look super feminine and pretty and are, obviously, also on trend this season.

5. Accessorising your swimwear
Over the past few years, we have seen countless pictures of celebs who seem to have spent hours on their swimwear outfit, taking time to select each accessory to suit their costume. Victoria Beckham is one such example and a good one to keep track of for she is certainly in the know when it comes to fashion.

Fashionable accessories can be anything from matching bags to hats, sunglasses, flip flops, kaftans and sarongs. Without doubt the easiest accessory to find is often jewellery, from bangles and necklaces to ankle bracelets and dangly or hooped earrings.

If you really want to pull off the swimwear fashion statement of the season, try matching your swimming costume to a killer pair of heels!

Gemma Sly writes for Leia Lingerie. When not blogging, she can often be found looking for places to buy swimwear of her own.

Whenever you read self-improvement books that aim to make you a better person, they tend to focus predominantly on things that can be easily measured in terms of success. This tends to mean things like making more money, working faster and longer hours, or getting into better shape. All these things though mean improving life for yourself, and this isn’t really what most of us would consider being a ‘better person’. Sure real self improvement means becoming more selfless and doing things that help you to give back to the world?

Here then we will look at some things that can help to make you a better person and improve you in more concrete ways that really matter. Why not make 2013 the year that you become a better person? Here are four resolutions to help you do just that.

We're thinking of you

Give to Charity

One of the best ways to start doing something good for the world is to donate to charity and this can mean contributing to any number of issues and causes from helping to find cures for serious diseases, to providing food and shelter for those who don’t have it, to helping the sick, to combating serious crimes such as human trafficking. Just set a budget for how much of your salary you’re willing to donate, and then commit to donating that amount each month. Giving some of your money to a cause you believe in gives you all the more reason to succeed yourself and means that it’s no longer just you who benefits from your hard work and ingenuity.

Support a Cause

If you really believe in something then there is much more you can do other than just provide financial aid. To really get behind a cause means to contribute your time as well by volunteering for instance, or to help spread the word by wearing t-shirts. Choose a cause, whether it be world hunger or stop human trafficking and then learn everything you can about it and look into the various ways you may be able to help. Dedicate a set amount of time you want to contribute to supporting your cause, and then stick to it as you might a new workout.

Improve Your Traits

All of us have things we want to improve about ourselves, and new year resolutions are often a time to zero in on those. Rather than focussing on your spare tire though, or tendency toward procrastination, this time why not focus on being more forgiving? On improving your manners? Or on improving your temper? By finding one particular trait you want to improve and making an effort to do so you can see some very concrete results.

Do More Good Deeds

While it might sound like a Brownie resolution, doing good deeds is something most of us could do more of. Most of us find that there are opportunities to help others or do nice things for people that present themselves every day, and making an effort to seizing these at least once a day is a great way to improve your karmic balance.
