What Causes Swimming Pool Accidents?

What Causes Swimming Pool Accidents?

Falling, electrocution, and drowning are all dangers of having a home pool. What almost never gets mentioned is why these accidents happened in the first place. We too often focus on the cure and avoid thinking about how we can stop these things from happening in the first place.

Read on to find out more about some of the most common causes of accidents in swimming pools.

Carelessness

Whether it’s falling on the side of the pool or crashing into the water and drowning, most of these accidents are caused by simple carelessness. People often fail to understand the dangers pools can present. And if they do understand them they rarely give them the seriousness they deserve.

The best thing people can do is to install safety fences around the side of the pool and make it clear to everyone what’s appropriate and what isn’t. Safety fences, for example, caused drowning rates in California to drop by up to 90 per cent.

Parents can play a major role in ensuring children don’t run around the side of the pool or leave toys lying around.

Electrical Goods

In the middle of a big pool party, the music is blaring and the barbeque is starting to sizzle. People start bringing their electrical items into the pool area. This could be a stereo or a mobile phone. Electricity and water doesn’t mix. This is why it’s important to set up an exclusion zone around the pool.

It’s dangerous enough attempting to extract things like pool lights without causing electrocution. It gets even worse when other electrical items are brought into the vicinity.

Damaged Items

Previous damage to the pool area can lead to further accidents. If you have a tiled poolside area and one of them comes loose, this is already a trip hazard. If the depth changes on the side of the pool have rubbed off over time, younger swimmers might inadvertently travel into a depth they aren’t trained to handle.

It’s important to be vigilant and get apparently minor repairs completed immediately. Nobody should be allowed back in the pool area in the meantime.

Defective equipment can cause the same problems. If your pool ladder is on its last legs, it needs to be replaced or the whole thing could fall off and into the water. You should get into the habit of inspecting your pool at the start and end of the summer.

What Can Happen?

Whilst the chances of permanent injury and death aren’t particularly high, remember you’re responsible for the safety of others. Guests could quite easily lodge a legal case against you if they injure themselves. Although friends are unlikely to try and ruin you, they’ll want some compensation if they have to pay any legal bills.

You need to ensure this has no chance of happening. Everything is within your control. If you’re in any doubt as to the safety of your pool, you need to close the whole thing down. It might be disappointing, but risking injury isn’t worth the hassle.

Top 5 Most Common Causes Of Car Accidents

Share/Bookmark

Going on a road trip? Plan ahead by taking every precaution and ready yourself (and your car) for the hours and hours of driving. Nobody wants to be in a car accident. However, when on the road there are many uncontrollable factors. Here are the five most common causes of car accidents with simple solutions:

  1. Distracted Driving

The percentage of car accidents that revolve around distracted driving is growing to terrifyingly high levels. With more and more technology to distract us, it’s a growing problem in America, and it’s mercilessly taking its toll. Texting and smartphone usage has become the most common manifestation of the driving distraction, but other distractions that also very commonly cause accidents include tuning the radio (or other audio-related action, like changing the CD), eating, talking to others and putting on makeup.

Solution: Just drive. Really. Everything else can wait. Even if you feel like it really can’t, really, it can. Don’t put your life or anyone else’s life in danger just because you absolutely must eat in the car or check your texts. Leaving earlier or putting your phone away from the driver’s seat could be annoying or troublesome, but it’s a lot better than an accident.

  1. Reckless Driving

Speeding is a common practice among drivers these days, and for many, unfortunately, it’s not until they’ve gotten a ticket, or an accident, that they finally realize that it’s not worth it. Other reckless driving behaviors include failing to signal properly, unsafe lane changes, tailgating and failing to yield the right of way.

Solution: Be respectful not only of the laws but of the drivers with whom you are sharing the road. Don’t assume that other drivers and read your mind or that your “courageous,” reckless driving will impress anyone.

  1. Equipment Failure

Surprisingly numerous car accidents happen because of the car’s mechanical failure. Tire blowouts, brake failures, steering failure and suspension failures all cause the car to lose control and accidents commonly happen as a result.

Solution: Because of this, it is critical for you to keep up with the maintenance of your car. If you are driving a vehicle that is rented or leased, make sure that the company that owns the car is reliable and has proof of meeting industry safety standards.

  1. Drunk Driving

Awareness of this problem has grown significantly over the past years. However, it is still a huge problem. Not much needs to be said about how this type of accident happens, but it cannot be emphasized enough how unnecessary, irresponsible, and threatening this type of behavior is. Drunk driving accidents tend to be very serious and too many people and families have been victimized, harmed, and killed by drunk drivers.

Solution: Every single drunk driving accident can be avoided by taking a cab or riding with a designated driver.

  1. Roadways

When the city or state fails to properly maintain the roads, it can cause, and has caused, traffic accidents. Common problems include uncleared roadway debris, faded road signs, potholes and improperly managed road construction.

Solution: Unfortunately, because the city is at fault for these accidents, there is little you can do around the time of the accident to prevent it. Do your best to stay vigilant, knowing that these types of accidents can and do happen, and report problematic areas and situations when you see them.

5 Common Causes Of Home Water Damage

5 Common Causes Of Home Water Damage

Share/Bookmark

Most people associate ‘flooding’ with natural disasters, but this is not the only way floods can happen. Your home is constantly at a risk for flooding itself- whether from leaky pipes or negligence- and precautionary steps should be taken to prevent this from happening to you. While a hurricane or flash flood can be hard to protect your home from, most causes of flooding can be prevented by regular maintenance and attention to detail. Don’t get caught with a big bill because you didn’t check your sink.

Broken Pipes

Pipes run water all through your home and are a very prominent risk for flooding. Old pipes, shoddy pipes, and random bursts can all be risks for flooding in your home. If you know you’re getting an older home, having a plumber come out to check the pipes for leaks or if they need replacing can be the difference between paying to fix a leak and paying to renovate your home if they burst. Your garbage disposal can also cause pipes to burst, so regular care and maintenance should be a priority. Sometimes, rogue roots can dig into pipes that run out into your yard, and in that case you may not even realize there’s a problem. If you live in cold weather, beware of freezing pipes, as these can easily burst as well. Insulate the pipes or run trickles of water through them throughout the winter to keep them flowing.

Sewer Drainage

Sewage backup can be costly-and messy. No one wants to step out into a yard of sewage, or even worse, have it flood your home. Most sewage leaks are caused by invading roots and plants or failures in the sewage network like blockages, backups, etc. Try pouring root killer down your toilets every year or, if your area is prone to heavy rains and other causes of sewage backup, have someone install a standpipe or flood drain plug.

Accidents

Leaving sinks or tubs running is another cause of accidental flooding. Overflowing toilets and ignoring running water can cause serious damage to home. Make sure you’re paying attention when running a bath or when your toilet clogs, and keep an eye on kids- they’re the main perpetrators of accidental flooding. Don’t let them run baths without supervision and teach them good habits like making sure the sink is off after washing their hands or brushing their teeth.

Heating & Air Conditioning Units

HVACs can be a cause of water damage as well. When not properly maintained, they can create moisture buildup that can cause damage unbeknownst to property owners. They also encourage the growth of mold that can further damage the home. Be sure to regularly check your unit to make sure nothing is leaking.

Natural Disasters

However, flash floods do happen. During heavy rains, snow, hurricanes, tropical storms and other natural disasters, rains and flooding can be unavoidable. Damage to the home can be minimized by taking precautionary measures such as raising appliances and turning off electricity and water.

If precautionary measures aren’t taken, your home can suffer significant water damage. While natural disasters may be inevitable, other leaks and breaks can be taken care of swiftly or prevented altogether. Take care of your home and implement these preventative steps to keep your wallet and your home happy.
