Not Just the Baby’s: Breastfeeding Benefits for Mom

Breastfeeding an infant is the best way to give them a good start in life. However, there are also several compelling reasons that have nothing to do with the baby that should encourage new mothers to make the decision to breastfeed. After all, it is important to take care of your own health as well as your baby’s, and studies have proven that breastfeeding is beneficial for both parties. Therefore, when you breastfeed, you can rest assured that you are doing the best thing for your entire family.

Benefits That Mothers Receive

1. Improved Health – Experts have conclusively linked breastfeeding to a reduction in the risk of developing breast cancer, postpartum depression, type II diabetes and ovarian cancer. Additionally, some studies have indicated that it is easier for breastfeeding mothers to lose weight quickly after giving birth, and there is also some evidence that breastfeeding can have a positive effect on osteoporosis.

2. Breastfeeding Is Cost-Efficient – Formula can be extremely expensive, and it does not have the same health benefits as breast milk. Because of this, it makes the most sense for women to breastfeed their babies, especially if they are working with a small budget. In fact, the money that you save on formula can help you provide a better life for your infant.

3. Increased Bond With Your Child – Babies require a physical connection with their parents in order to fully bond with them. Breastfeeding naturally makes this process much easier, and the bond that is formed during this time period can last for a lifetime. Use of a breast feeding pillow can help to ensure that the infant and mother are comfortable during this process.

4. Breastfeeding Makes Life Less Difficult – Although the breastfeeding process can be difficult at first, it will actually make your life much easier in the long run. For example, you will never need to worry about running to the store to buy formula, and you will also never need to take the time to measure, mix and heat the formula to the right temperature. Additionally, you will be able to easily feed your child in any situation. This aspect alone makes breastfeeding attractive for many new mothers, especially because it means that you will not need to carry as many supplies with you each time you leave the house.

5. You Can Avoid Formula Guilt – Many mothers who make the decision to use formula instead of breast milk end up feeling guilty when they realize how many health benefits they have denied their child. Keep in mind that breastfeeding for any period of time is beneficial. Therefore, even if you end up stopping after a few months, you can still give their life a better start.

With all the mutual benefits, it is no wonder that approximately 77 percent of U.S. women breastfeed their baby for at least the first month. However, it is important to keep in mind that the World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding for a minimum of two years. Either way, every time that your child is breastfed, you are both receiving important benefits such as the decreased risk of developing serious health issues.

Writer Melanie Fleury nursed all four of her children. While she enjoyed the quiet time bonding with the little one, she did find it took practice to get comfortable in a position. Armed with her favorite breast feeding pillow, she was able to spend much more time feeding while still enjoying a moment in her day to sit and relax.
