Check out US 19 in lovely Florida.

"Take one family's grief and multiply it by 100. That's how many pedestrians have been hit and killed on Florida's US-19 in five years. It's a six-lane meat grinder running 30 miles up Florida's Gulf Coast. We first visited in 2002, and found the shoulders of the road dotted with white crosses memorializing the dead. With fatalities in triple figures, US-19 is at the top of our list of dangerous roads."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7844269/ns/dateline_nbc//

Don't even think about getting out of your car around it.

The people:

We have the drunks, the drugged up geriatrics, the blind geriatrics who think they can see just fine, the tourist who forgot to bring their brains with them before going on vacation, the snow birds from the northern states like New York who are just as bad down here as they are up there, and just about any kind of Assh0le you can think of behind the wheel of a motor vehicle here.

The Roads:
Black Ice: the oils from vehicles that have dripped on roadways float on the thin layer of water resulting is a very slippery condition. Also, some of the oils in the asphalt roadways can float on top of the water and make that road even more dangerous. Most of these roads have poor signage and make absolutely no sense.

Weather:
We have hurricanes, tornadoes, tropical storms, hail, floods and plenty of fog.

Wildlife:
After I saw what hitting an alligator at 65 mph does to a truck I can't even imagine a deer being worse. Funny thing is the gator just looks at you then walks away unscathed. The suspension on the truck was toast.

Now put those morons listed earlier on a dim lit road, in a tropical area that has black ice on a regular basis. This is how US 19 is.

It sucks driving in Florida and can be worse walking here depending on where you are. If you don't believe me check out the dateline story.

I would almost welcome some of the roads you have listed in comparison to some of the conditions and people here. I would have less Assh0les to worry about while dealing with whatever the road gives me.

You should definitely include greek national highways, especially Athens-Patras. It has claimed the lives of TENS OF THOUSAND. About 20.000 people die in Greece every year in road accidents!! Could be the most dangerous road there is.

The A54 Congleton to Buxton a dangerous road? I guess so, if you drive like an idiot, but hardly in the company of some of these others. What about scary mountain roads in BC, Canada? All the American examples are of bland highways where there are simply a lot of accidents.

U.S. Hwy 431 - all of the crosses were put up by the local fire chief at Longview F.D. since the vast majority of the fatal accidents occurred in that fire district, most of the wrecks are head-on collisions due to people trying to pass other cars over lots and lots of little blind hills

Interesting, but the writing is horrendous...

#38
"The A77, a road in South-West Scotland, is rated in the most 30 dangerous roads in the world."

Well apparently it is not, because it is number 38.

#10

"Splugen Pass, a high mountain pass and a boundary between the Lepontine and Rhaaetian Alps, is not very thrilling but great fun"

Thrill: a feeling of excitement and pleasure

Fun: enjoyment, amusement, or lighthearted pleasure

#9

"If you are nuts enough to race at the old road over Saint Gothard Pass, make sure you are covered by some sort of life assurance policy. Though it’s not much of a deadly road, you might like to stay away from it whenever possible."

If it is not much of a deadly road, why would I need a life insurance policy?

For Route 431: "Sixty kids were killed in a bus-track crash last year but the road is still frequented by local school buses."<br/><br/>I think you better check your information. 60 kids were INVOLVED but not killed.
